Thailand is a land of diverse landscapes, from lush forests and rolling hills to vast river systems, with the mighty Mekong river shaping the environment and the lives of its inhabitants. As the Mekong winds through the eastern border, it carves through jungles, creating flooded landscapes and deep pools where animals, like elephants, enjoy cooling off, and macaques forage for food. These creatures, including the elephants and macaques, also eat clay to obtain minerals. The tropical rainforests surrounding the river shelter hidden wildlife, such as bats that roost in limestone caves during the day before emerging at dusk to hunt insects. Farther south, giant flying foxes, with wingspans of up to 5 feet, roost in trees near an ancient Buddhist temple, feeding on fruit and displaying the rich biodiversity of Thailand's ecosystems.
